FIT'S IN THE GENES
THE TANS SHOW THAT THE FAMILY THAT EXERCISES TOGETHER, STAYS TOGETHER.
28-Feb-2018

While many families spend their Saturday mornings digging in at the local kopitiam, the Tan family does things a little differently. The trio lace up their track shoes and drive 30 minutes from their Punggol home to the Sports Hub. Here, they join hundreds of other participants at the 100PLUS Promenade and by 9am, they're running, doing push-ups and jumping jacks. "It's our weekly dose of exercise and family bonding," says Madam Lily Lim, a homemaker, during a break in the session. Hearing an instructor blow her whistle, she runs back to join the group. "A group setting helps. It's a good motivator," she tells us after the 90-minute session is over.

The session is one of the daily activities that the Sports Hub organises to encourage Singaporeans to get fit. Saturday's sessions, dubbed SuperFit.Community (Run), offer a mix of cardio and strength training, with an emphasis on endurance fitness and overall wellness. As Mdm Lim, 54, puts it, they are ideal for people just starting on their fitness journey. "Although I go for regular brisk walks, these sessions are more intense and offer a better burn," she, adding that she has lost a few pounds since starting the sessions six months ago.

THE NEXT LEVEL

For those more accustomed to exercising, Tuesday's Boot Camp sessions are a better fit, says Mr Anthony Tan, Mdm Lim's husband. Also 54, he plays football regularly and is a former marathoner. "I haven't run a marathon for more than 15 years — but the new friends I made at the Experience Sports FIT-Sessions encouraged me to pound the pavement again and last December, I did a 10km run," says the sales manager. Like his wife, Mr Tan has also lost weight. But he has also improved his game on the pitch. "I feel like I have better stamina and can last longer during a match," explains the left mid-fielder with a grin.

Another reason the couple say they want to stay healthy is their 10 year-old son, Artemis. "We want to be there for him as he grows up and we should stay healthy for that," says Mdm Lim. Mr Tan agrees, adding that exposing Artemis to exercise early will also encourage him to adopt a healthier life as he grows up. "Exercising together is also a fun and healthy way to spend time as a family."
